It was a glorious day in the Bay Area today. Nothing like summer finally arriving after the autumnal equinox. Feeling restless, I decided to head out to the Barrel House at Drake's Brewing located in my fair city of San Leandro.  The Barrel House is located at the south end of the Westgate Mall. This place appears to have been an old factory at some point that was converted into retail space. If you go, head towards the Wal Mart and go west under a small bridge. Drake's will be on your right.

Let me tell you, it's not upscale or hip in any sense of the word. That's a good thing. This place is all about the beer. Sure, it's comfortable and clean and they have outdoor seating. I enjoy hanging out with other beer fans and this place had plenty. Today, I had two of Drake's beers for the first time and I was not disappointed.

First up, was the Blonde. The menu board said it was a Kolsch style beer and has an alcohol content by volume of 4.8%. The beer had a medium dense head and was a nice straw gold in color. It was very drinkable and light tasting with a subdued hoppy finish. This beer is delicious and perfect for drinking on a warm afternoon.

My second pint was the Haus Fest, in honor of Oktober Fest, weighing in at a nice 5.8% ACV. I have not had too many beers like this to be honest. It was crisp, a teeny bit boozy feeling with a lingering light hoppiness on the tongue. The head was almost creamy with the bubbles in brew being very fine in size. If this is what Oktoberfest is all about, no wonder people say Germans are great party going people.

There are over a dozen beers available on top, with one or two nitrous brews as well. You can get beer to go in a variety of containers such as 22 ounce bottles, growlers, cases and kegs. They only serve a few snacks such as pretzels and mixed nuts but they do have menus from local delivery places. The also have lots of events throughout the year, including First Fridays.  I am definitely going back and will update you on their other brews.
